ABSTRACT

The energy crisis caused by the increasing demand and rising prices for fossil fuel prices and the environmental issues related to the pollution and greenhouse gas emissions from their combustion has driven the global research interest towards renewable energy sources dramatically in the recent years. Among various renewable energy sources, biofuels are emerging as one of the critical players with huge potential in reducing the dependency on the fossil fuels as well as mitigating the CO2 emissions. It is foreseeable that in the future the fossil fuels could not be entirely replaced by biofuels. To get a clear view of fossil fuels versus biofuels, a comparative overview of their advantages and disadvantages is necessary. This chapter provides a general overview of the comparison of fossil fuels versus biofuels in an environmental perspective. Special attention is given to the environmental impacts such as greenhouse gas emissions and worldwide energy consumptions. The energy utilization projections are also given based on the knowledge obtained from the literature.
