ABSTRACT

This chapter will therefore summarise some of the principles that can be applied to modulate radiation effects in normal tissues in general, and present selected investigations as examples to illustrate the efficacy of the different strategies. It must be emphasized, however, that the vast majority of approaches to modifying normal tissue side effects have been experimental and not validated in clinical studies. Moreover, most strategies are aiming at modification of early normal tissue reactions, as these are usually better assessed and documented compared to late sequelae, and patients are way more compliant to accept mitigative or even prophylactic biology-based activities during their time of treatment as compared to their asymptomatic post-therapeutic time interval before clinically manifest late radiogenic symptoms occur.
