ABSTRACT

A method of to analyze the seismic behavior of fill dam was investigated. Simulation analysis of the Aratozawa Dam was conducted by modelling the earthquake motions at the dam that was recorded during the Iwate-Miyagi Nairiku Earthquake in 2008. Simulations were conducted using a three-dimensional analytical model and multiphase dynamic interaction analysis code. Although the adopted constitutive models used the Mohr Coulomb yield surface, the calculation methods for the plastic shear strain within the yield surface were different for each constitutive model. The soil parameters used in the simulations were determined from the results of previous research and simulations of laboratory soil tests. Regarding response acceleration, the simulation results obtained with the nonlinear constitutive model were in close agreement with the recorded results. However, different values of crest settlement were obtained for the adopted nonlinear constitutive model, with the amount of settlement at the crest ranging from 0.07 to 0.21 m.
