ABSTRACT

Athletes with vision impairments can compete in a wide range of para-sports. Some who are involved in individual sports may compete with a sighted guide, whereas in team sports, blindfolds are used to ensure all players have the same vision capabilities. There are many potential causes of vision impairment, some of which have nutrition recommendations which may reduce the progression of the disease. Athletes with vision and hearing impairments have nutritional requirements that are the same as for able-bodied athletes; however, the practical aspects of nutrition will require some thought and modification. Furthermore, sleep disruption is more prevalent in athletes with complete visual impairments; hence, nutritional strategies to support sleep are worth consideration.
