ABSTRACT

Lifestyle is expressed in the behavior patterns of individuals and groups. It encompasses opinions, values, interests, and goals, as well as particular activities. A good part of patient care involves lifestyle coaching for improvement in health issues. Coaching a patient to get out of the way of their body’s efforts and ability to heal involves education and finding their keys to motivation. While everyone knows that smoking is bad, its influence on healing and pain is underestimated. Elective surgeries and procedures are still performed on smokers when they are at a disadvantage for complications and healing issues. Patients need to realize that providing opiate medication to make inflammation-producing behaviors more comfortable has quite gone out of style, since high levels of these medicines have been shown to be dangerous and even counterproductive. A good next step is the progression to vaporizer technology that avoids fire and resultant cadmium exposure while maintaining the social structure of the habit.
