ABSTRACT

This chapter discusses some developments since the project ended and considers some North American applications with reference to the Geospatial Maturity Assessment indicators developed by the National States Geographic Information Council. A series of workshops were organized throughout Europe during the second half of 2008 and the beginning of 2009 to facilitate the comparative analysis of the experiences of the spatial data infrastructure (SDI). The workshops focused on common issues, usability, and socioeconomic impact of SDIs and addressed the integration between SDIs and e-government policies. The findings of the eSDI-NET+ project highlight both the number and the diversity of SDI and SDI-like activities that are currently underway throughout Europe. A great deal of thought was given to the criteria for selecting SDIs and their evaluation in the eSDI-Net+ project. The inclusion of thematic SDIs also brings a much stronger user perspective into the discussion as most thematic SDIs are driven to a considerable extent by specific sets of user requirements.
