ABSTRACT

The basis of interesting storytelling is conflict, and every story related to environmental conservation is crammed with conflict. Many concepts have been given to portray life and its interconnectedness: Pachamama, Gaia, Land community, Animated Earth, Earth community … Although these concepts have permeated our intellect, they have not permeated our hearts yet. We still think Nature exists to serve humans; this puts us in an adversarial position towards the environment. If Nature and all it encompasses is an object to profit from, then it is almost impossible to protect Nature; protection is left in hands of the market forces, and we are a long way from giving Nature the same rights as corporations: legal personhood with guardians to protect it.
