ABSTRACT

An important goal of most augmented reality systems is to display computergenerated objects so that they appear to be aligned with the real objects in the scene. For example, in a jet-engine maintenance application, we may want to display a computer-generated arrow that points to the faulty wire on the wiring harness; clearly, the arrow must point to the correct wire for the system to be useful at all. The correct positioning of the virtual objects with respect to the real objects is known as registration, and failure of the system to correctly align the virtual objects is called registration error. Figure 6.1 below shows a system with significant registration error and Figure 6.2 shows the same system with the error corrected.
