Bioprocesses are often quite sensitive to small changes in physical (temperature, particle size) and chemical (viability of initiator, purity of nutrients) influences. Because of this, seldom are two batches of any bioengineered material exactly the same (different starting materials, length of reaction, percent yield). The end point of the reaction and yield may vary from batch to batch for no easily discernable reason. Traditional methods of analysis are often too slow to allow the operator to make small batch corrections in real time. Spectrometric monitoring is an ideal solution to correct minute variations that could greatly affect the yield and purity of the final product. Modern spectrometers, equipped with powerful, high-speed computers and using advanced algorithms (chemometrics) are capable of analyzing and controlling the most complex reaction mixtures.
