ABSTRACT

This chapter analyzes the competitive potential of fixed Microwave Access (WiMAX) networks in different market conditions. It provides an overview of techno-economic modeling methods and tools, and how these can be utilized to analyze different types of WiMAX deployment scenarios. A quantitative techno-economic model is constructed for analyzing fixed WiMAX network deployments in urban, suburban, and rural areas. Quantitative techno-economic models are constructed, combining market-and service-related parameters and forecasts with cost and performance-related parameters of the analyzed technologies. Risk analysis using Monte Carlo simulation, for example, is a complement to sensitivity analysis. In addition to the various technical parameters and assumptions, well-formulated forecasts for service penetration, tariffs, and traffic evolution are also required for the techno-economic analysis. The techno-economic model calculates the number of cells and sectors required to fulfill the coverage and capacity demands of the service area. The generally low cost of WiMAX spectrum licenses can be seen as a driver for WiMAX toward mobile services.
