ABSTRACT

The purpose of this chapter is to provide an overview of the relevant research on perception-response time in the context of motor vehicle operation. It should be made clear at the beginning that there are not many quality investigations of driver perception-response time, and most of those concern relatively simple scenarios. Although research continues to appear in the literature, the lack of a truly adequate database is unlikely to improve greatly in the foreseeable future because: (1) the work that is likely to yield useful results is difficult and expensive to carry out, and (2) there are a virtually unlimited number of possible conditions to be investigated.
