ABSTRACT

The acquisition of new skills is critical for operators who are required to adapt activities to workplaces that are new or which have been updated with different equipment, tasks, or procedures. For situations in which it is not costeffective or safe for the operator to acquire these skills on the job, special training conditions may be organized so that the operator may acquire these behaviors before entering (or reentering) the workplace. These training conditions are designed to provide the operator with an opportunity to practice the skills that will be necessary for safe and effective performance in the workplace. The purpose of this chapter is to describe how training conditions can be organized to have a significant impact on the effectiveness of performance when the employee enters the workplace.
