ABSTRACT

In 1973, he was asked to begin to develop a human factors/ergonomics concentration at Miami University. In 1977, a meeting with Michael Smith, then chief of the Motivation and Stress Research Branch of the National Institute of Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) in Cincinnati, began his long-standing interest in ergonomic problems of video display terminal (VDT) workers as well as his collaboration with NIOSH. His first field study on ergonomic issues associated with the now-expanding use of VDT technology in office work was presented at the 1979 Milan conference on ergonomics of VDTs organized by Grandjean and Vigliani.
