During the response to the Pentagon following the terrorist attacks of 9/11, responders benefited from regional mutual aid agreements by being able to receive emergency assistance from neighboring communities. The District of Columbia, Prince George’s county, and Montgomery county were just a few of the jurisdictions to send police officers, firefighters, emergency medical personnel, and even a procurement and purchasing specialist to assist Arlington county with managing the consequences of the attack. The events in Arlington on 9/11 clearly demonstrate the need for local communities to establish relationships and joint agreements with governmental agencies and neighboring jurisdictions, as well as private entities to ensure that adequate resources and personnel will be available to assist in mitigating a large-scale natural disaster or act of terrorism.
