ABSTRACT

A major component of microprocessor power is clock power. There are many clock-gating techniques investigated in microprocessor design. Data gating is an alternate gating method for power reduction. Logic design refers to the topology and logic structure used to implement datapath elements such as adders and multipliers. Switching power is a main source of power dissipation in a static circuit due to capacitance charging and discharging. Dynamic logic is usually implemented in high-performance application or complex logic functions where speed and density overrule power. Power contention is a unique power consumption component existing in domino circuit. Power analysis of a design is as important as the power optimization. To optimize power, designer needs to know power hungry blocks, what type of power needs to be improved—dynamic, static, or both—and by how much. Historically, main focus in design has been to optimize for the highest performance while neglecting power implications.
