ABSTRACT

Trading of floriculture crops or flowering plants and their products, such as potted flower, cut foliage and bedding plants, is a major contributor to the economy of many countries across the world from America to Asia, Europe, and Africa. There is high demand for floriculture crops and their products, especially in the developed countries, because of their numerous usages. Floriculture crops and their products are used to decorate buildings—inside and outside—and serve as gifts fora occasions such as birthday and valentine, and a symbol of condolence when loved ones die. In this chapter, we highlight the success that has been achieved in the floriculture industry globally and speculate what lies ahead for the industry in the coming years. With a 19% share of the world production, China has 2taken over from the Netherlands as the topmost producer of floriculture crops and their products. This is followed by USA (12%), the Netherlands (10%), Japan (8%), and Brazil (5%). The total world exports and imports of floriculture corps are rising on a yearly basis, with the only exception being 2015 and 2016 when there were slight declines. The world exports and imports of floriculture in 2017 (latest) accounted for worth USD 8.7 and 8.2 billion, respectively. Among all the continents, Europe remains the largest trader of floriculture crops and their products, with the Netherlands still maintaining the lead as the highest producer. We speculate that the floriculture industry will grow bigger in the nearest future, provided the floriculture producing countries, especially from Africa and Asia, can produce cheaper floriculture products with better quality.
