ABSTRACT

In this chapter, the authors present methods and measures to evaluate the environmental aspects of the workplace. They describe a number of the more common environmental tests. Armed with a tool belt of calipers, tape measures, and light and sound level meters, the tester may have to consider the more mundane issues of the workplace environment. Measuring environmental phenomena, as dynamic characteristics, requires the human factors test and evaluation specialist to conduct measurements while the system is up and running. Use the appropriate communication system, facility, or environment appropriate for the application under test. Test procedures apply to enclosed areas that have controls for environmental factors and to enclosures that meet the provisions, with the exception of Wet Bulb Globe Temperature, which applies to the outdoor environment and enclosed areas without any means to control these factors. The Wind Chill Index is a commonly used scale that combines ambient temperatures with wind speed to express the severity of cold environments.
