ABSTRACT

This study was undertaken to determine the major phenotypes of Vitamin D Binding Protein (VDBP) in Kuwaiti population. The genomic regions containing the nucleotide bases responsible for two point mutations (T to G and C to A) in the VDBP gene were amplified in vitro and sequenced. The sequence data were used to deduce the VDBP phenotypes from the genotypes. The results showed the presence of four VDBP phenotypes (Gc1S, Gc1F, Gc2 and GcA) in Kuwaiti nationals. Three of the phenotypes (Gc1S, Gc1F and Gc2) have been described in the literature in other populations, e.g. Africans, Asians and Caucasians etc., but GcA is unique and it has not been described in those populations.
