ABSTRACT

In recent years there has been an upsurge in the molecular markers based evaluaion of genetic diversity and their use in biotechnological applications. There is a continuous need to find advanced traits from the wild varieties for the integration of these traits into crop species thereby imparting stress resistance. This review focuses on the advent and up rise of SSR marker system which has been abundantly used for studies of genetic diversity, and relatedness between wild and cultivated varieties across leguminous plant species. An approach to highlight advantages of SSR markers have been made, so they could be used to introduce agriculturally important traits for the improvement of crops.
