ABSTRACT

The initial “big idea” for American Medical Electronics product was to make a more convenient/portable version of the electrobiology external fracture healing device, by getting approval for a shorter treatment time and by making it more efficient by utilizing a ferromagnetic core material so it could operate on a rechargeable battery pack. In all, five different PhysioStim device models were developed to treat nonunions at different anatomical sites: tibia, ulna/radius, humeral head, hip, and the clavicle. In addition, the magnetic field energy was recovered through the same coil winding that generated it: i.e., there was no separate secondary for field recovery, reducing/eliminating coupling inefficiencies with the recovery winding. This arrangement also made manufacturing of the coil simpler and less expensive. The Company’s mission is to improve patients’ lives by providing superior reconstruction and regenerative musculoskeletal solutions to physicians worldwide.
