ABSTRACT

The penetration depth of Terahertz (THz) is typically less than that of microwaves, but it can penetrate nonconducting materials. THz has also received interest since it can be used for making imaging possible in locations not accessible to relevant investigations with conventional techniques and with reasonable resolution. THz spectroscopy typically uses a single-point measurement of a homogenous sample, and the resulting THz electric field can be recorded as a function of time. Melanoma and cutaneous squamous cell carcinoma are high-risk skin cancers with the potential to metastasize and cause lethality. Dysplastic nevi are melanoma precursors, and they thus need to be detected and eliminated very early on to escape cancer development. Skin burn injuries are common and may in certain cases need additional treatment beyond the natural healing processes that are going on. The market already contains instruments based on several technologies that accomplish such a diagnosis.
