ABSTRACT

Medication nonadherence is a public health challenge in low- and middle-income countries. Several factors (e.g., healthcare provider-patient relationship, healthcare system, economy) have been associated with nonadherence to medication. The main challenge of medication nonadherence is associated with the patient’s psyche. Scientists and healthcare professionals must understand the science of behavioral health and proven theories on enhancing adherence (e.g., theory of planned behavior, social cognitive theory, health belief model). Several devices and technologies (both free and commercial) have been developed and used to improve adherence. Each of these tools has advantages and disadvantages. They must be easily accessible and easy to use. Pharmacists are in a position to be catalysts for enhancing medication adherence. We need to research and develop more cost-effective technology-enabled user-centric devices.
