ABSTRACT

Liveness-assured robust and reliable biometric recognition is a challenging task. The traditional biometrics like fingerprint, face, and iris etc. in a standalone mode do not guarantee liveness property and require additional mechanism to verify the liveliness of the user. Bioelectric signals such as electrocardiogram (ECG), electroencephalogram (EEG), and photoplethysmogram (PPG) have an in-built vitality check mechanism, and because of this, they have attracted the attention of biometric scientists. This chapter presents an overview of application of artificial intelligence tools, namely, ANN, fuzzy logic, deep learning for PPG-based person recognition. An algorithm for biometric recognition using PPG has also been explained. Experiments for both within session and across session scenarios were conducted and results obtained thereof sufficiently exhibit the biometric potential of PPG signal.
