ABSTRACT

This chapter describes various technologies for remotely monitoring the patients' conditions. Pervasive care is an integration of mobile computing, widespread Internet-connectivity and miniaturized medical devices employing intelligent techniques to provide remote monitoring of the elderly and chronic patients. The use of pervasive health care has amplified the medical infrastructure, improved the process flow and optimized the use of resources. Remote care is about taking care of patients in their own homes, nursing homes where the patients are residing or remote clinics that lack sufficient clinical infrastructure that patients can access without physically meeting medical experts. Remote care reduces the lack of connectivity during a medical event even when the caregiver is not in the immediate vicinity. Pervasive health care includes wireless monitoring, remote care, home-healthcare using wearable devices that monitor the vital signs and the use of Radio Frequency Identification tags to track the patients and elderly persons.
