ABSTRACT

Today, the most encountered disruptions in railway transportation stem from delays. The reasons causing delays can range from infrastructural problems to improper scheduling and planning operations, which are particularly becoming more crucial for single line railways. Effective planning must involve an action aimed to rearrange meetings of the trains across opposite directions in the same period to continue their ways. The meeting needs to be scheduled for them at an appropriate station. All these issues directly related to sustainable transportation since the railway is one of the cleanest transportation modes. In this paper, we propose a mathematical formulation to minimize the delays due to idle waits in meeting other trains in the single line. We consider an instance with real data and solve it using mathematical formulation. We report and analyze the results by comparing them with the current schedule. The results show that the delays can be reduced by approximately 38%.
