ABSTRACT

The management of packaging waste becomes vitally important not only due to its economic value but also because of environmental deterioration that results from increasing waste quantities and decreasing landfill capacities expected with a worldwide increase in consumption. Packaging waste must be collected separately to reduce environmental pollution, utilize landfills, contribute to the economy, and comply with the regulations in many developed and developing countries. In Turkey, recovery of packaging waste is regulated by the Regulation on the Management of Packaging Waste of the Turkish Republic Ministry of Environment and Urbanization. This study aims to manage the recovery of packaging waste efficiently, so we presented a modeling framework for a packaging waste recycling network design based on a case study considering the packaging and textile waste treatment in Kayseri, one of the largest cities in Turkey.
