ABSTRACT

Emergency surgical procedures represent a large part of the professional activity of acute care and trauma surgeons, and it is, therefore, the duty of all these professionals to be prepared to deal with complex non-traumatic cases in resource-limited environments. A routine procedure in a well-resourced, well-maintained, and developed operating room becomes exponentially more difficult in a resource-limited environment.

This chapter will cover some of the most common day-to-day situations of the emergency surgeon, focusing on how to recognize and make a safe diagnosis with limited resources, as well as the main technical aspects of the procedures to be described.
