ABSTRACT

The adoption of IoT devices in the domain of smart well-being has become part of the daily life of people all over the world. Nowadays, the IoT devices, especially used in the well-being umbrella, pose great benefits and assistance in the day-to-day activities of society, performing a great number of activities. Security experts must be familiar with the components, threats, and security challenges in order to effectively defend against sophisticated attacks. In this chapter, we describe the integration of IoT devices in three ecosystems falling under the greater umbrella of Smart Well-being. First, we present the concept of Smart Cities, the respective components, threats, vulnerabilities, opportunities, and benefits for society. Then we focus on two domains under the Smart Cities concept, Smart Homes, and Smart Healthcare. In the Smart Home domain, we emphasize on the automations, applications, and possible architecture of deployment while an extended analysis regarding security challenges, threats as well as security measures are discussed. The last part of the chapter focuses on the Smart Healthcare domain. This domain has appeared to be a business transformation in the next years and it will lead to enhanced services provision that will provide benefits to life, society, and environment. Despite the benefits they provide, there have been reported multiple barriers, with security having been characterized as a top challenge for healthcare organizations planning, implementing, and adopting IoT solutions.
