ABSTRACT

Livestock disease causes high economic losses, both in developed and developing countries. Many diseases of livestock have zoonotic potential and can affect humans. Hence, controlling these diseases in livestock would ensure human health. Livestock diseases are mainly caused by bacteria and viruses. Vaccines against some diseases are available. However, these vaccines either consist of live or killed strains, which have several disadvantages. In the present chapter, we highlight some important livestock diseases, mostly having zoonotic potential. Diseases are given along with any available vaccine. Potential of plant-based vaccines against livestock diseases and their go-to-market potential is also discussed. Cost-effectiveness and other advantages of plant-based vaccines are related to number of United Nations sustainable development goals (SDGs).
