ABSTRACT

Approximately 10% to 15% of women will experience a spontaneous abortion in their lifetime. Septic abortion is a complicated form of spontaneous abortion in which there is an intrauterine infection. Although not very common with spontaneous abortions and more common with induced abortions, timely intervention is required to recognize the signs and symptoms of septic abortions because this condition can lead to rapid deterioration of the mother and is life threatening. This chapter outlines the steps needed to make an early diagnosis and develop a treatment plan in order to save the lives of the women who experience septic abortions.
