ABSTRACT

This chapter discusses the basics of network analysis with R, mainly using the tidygraph and ggraph packages, which approach network analysis from the precepts of tidyverse. There are two basic concepts that express a certain situation in the shape of a network. The nodes (sometimes called actors) are the main units of analysis: one wants to understand how they relate to each other. The links (sometimes called connections or bonds) show how the nodes are connected to each other. The layout determines where the nodes will be positioned in the plane. In general, a good visual representation will be able to reveal the structure of the network, optimize the use of space and properly show the relationships between the nodes. The network is divided between the two major political blocs: the Justicialista and the Unin Cvica Radical. In a directed network, only the links leading to the specific node will be considered when calculating its geodetic paths.
