ABSTRACT

The panelists reflected on the importance of continuing to work to make spaces welcoming. Juliana talked about how draws inspiration from women activists and politicians in Latin America who work in the most violent conditions where their lives are threatened at every step. The panelists also reflected on their own strategies for coping and for transforming spaces from hostile into welcoming. Dara read a powerful manifesto outlining what Political Science as a discipline could be if it were to take as given the proposition that race, gender, and sexuality are fundamental to and constitutive of power and politics. Christina further emphasized the importance of self-care, of taking time out, deciding not to go to a conference when it is more important for one’s own well-being. Besides individual coping mechanisms, panelists emphasized the need to create safe spaces inside the hostile spaces.
