ABSTRACT

Foods high in omega-3 fatty acids include salmon, albacore, trout, herring, halibut, sardines, walnut, flaxseed oil, and canola oil. Omega-3 fatty acids are also present in shrimp, clams, light chunk tuna, catfish, cod, and spinach. long-chain-PUFAs LC-polyunsaturated fatty acids (LC-PUFAs) are also the precursors of several metabolites that are potent lipid mediators, which are beneficial in the prevention or treatment of several diseases. Different mechanisms contribute to these effects, including conditioning cell membrane function and composition, eicosanoid production, and gene expression. Omega-3 PUFAs are able to regulate inflammation, hyperlipidemia, platelet aggregation, and hypertension. LC-PUFAs are also the precursors of several metabolites that are potent lipid mediators, which are beneficial in the prevention or treatment of several diseases. The administration of phosphatidylserine-containing docosahexaenoic acid to the elderly with memory complaints has significantly improved the cognitive functions in a double-blind placebo-controlled trial.
