ABSTRACT

Tribal communities use various parts of Clerodendrum infortunatum (Hill glory bower) to treat colic, scorpion sting, snake bite, tumor, and certain skin diseases. The leaves of the plant are used orally for curing fever and bowel complaints. Roots are used as a cure for diarrhea. The plant has been used in the traditional Indian medicinal systems like Ayurveda, Siddha, Unani, and Homeopathy. Besides the medicinal properties, the plant has been used as fumigants and to control louse. The presence of flavonoids, steroids, saponins, phenols, and fixed oils has been reported in this plant. Different parts of Cleroendrum infortunatum possess antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, antidiabetic, anticonvulsant, antimicrobial, anthelmintic, analgesic, and hepatoprotective activities. Therefore, Clerodendrum infortunatum is a plant with immense medicinal potential. This chapter discusses the medicinal properties of Clerodendrum infortunatum L.
