ABSTRACT

This chapter discusses the challenges and possibilities that arise when one brings together mining and sustainability, especially in the light of Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). The mining industry is formed by the business segments of exploration, mining and mineral transformation. There are many classifications for mining activities in the mining industry. The geological resources are broadly subdivided into metallic minerals, industrial rocks and minerals, energetic resources, and water. According to the two presented search equations and the corresponding analytical procedures, the intellectual production by researchers seems to allow one to hypothesise the emergence of an interdisciplinary field of research in mining and sustainability. SDGs challenges mining businesses, social organisations, and local government not only to adapt and develop new ways of solving economic, social and environmental issues by internalising new rationalities for licensing, investing, operating, and decommissioning.
