ABSTRACT

South America experienced accelerated urbanization and dynamic economic growth since the past century. This chapter discusses the challenges and possible solutions for urban mobility in Argentina, Brazil, and Chile. Mobility measures are based on national policies according to each country’s infrastructure and resources. Some national governments are trying to shift the prevailing paradigms toward a sustainable urban transport system. Many countries in Europe adopt sustainable mobility planning. Initially, a general description of the current situation of urban transport in each country is provided, considering the transport structures, energy consumption and Green House Gas (GHG) emissions, and the context of national urban mobility policies. Subsequently, solutions are proposed based on the UN recommendations and the Solutions Project. Chile’s transport sector is responsible for 22% of the country’s GHG emissions with growth projections of 40% until 2020.
