ABSTRACT

Environmental pollution, including air, land, soil, water and acid rains, affect plants. These pollutants originate from various sources such as industry, commercial and transportation sectors. These materials and compounds affect the growth and development of plants directly or indirectly. They prevent the growth and development of horticultural plants and crops through a decrease in photosynthesis by obstruction of stomata or restriction of respiration. Therefore, plants must have mechanisms to tolerate or avoid unfavorable conditions. In this chapter, the types of environmental pollutants are introduced. Besides this, biosynthesizing the organic solutes as one of the mechanisms, how plants receive signals, as well as molecular regulations are discussed.
