ABSTRACT

In Denmark Insulating ceramic blocks Poroton are tested to stand a maximum of 2½ story buildings. In 2019 a 3½ story building was built in Odense designed as a ‘half-timbered’ construction in reinforced concrete columns and beams integrated in the block masonry able to perform as an insulating and permanent formwork at equally spread points where the vertical forces are brought down. To further fulfil the client's ambition of clay-based materials whenever possible, hollow ceramic blocks spanning between reinforced ceramic lintels has been used for the deck construction. Interviews with the consultants and the contractor will be carried out to expand knowledge and theories unfolded in the Industrial PhD thesis, ‘’BLOKMUR – MURBLOK’’ (2008). Questions asked are: What can we learn from the working drawings of Oluf Bagers Plads 4-8? Would this building technique be suitable for 5 story buildings and a more sustainable alternative to concrete element buildings?
