ABSTRACT

This paper presents experiences from recent years of teaching at the Norwegian University of Science and Technology (NTNU), aiming at improving the teaching of students of structural engineering by including architecture in the curriculum. The teaching is structured in the format of a Minor in Architecture program for Master students of structural engineering. This paper elaborates the formal framework, the educational content and the learning outcome of this Minor in Architecture program. After completing this Minor in Architecture program, a large share of the students proceeds with doing innovative and compelling Master theses in structural engineering, applying knowledge and skills apprehended through the Minor in architecture program. The Master theses of these students are represented in honorary awards at the Faculty of Engineering Science at NTNU, indicating that the education of structural engineers benefits from that architecture being included in the curriculum as it is done in this Minor in Architecture program.
