ABSTRACT

The paper presents a proposal for establishing an innovative consultancy model where structural engineers are invited as consultants into the architecture design studio, as a collaborative-partners, working directly with architecture students designing buildings with advanced structural systems. This proposal grows out of the experience of making a significant change to teach building structures inside of the design studio, starting in 2014. During this seven-year period two-different models for advanced structural systems integration were developed: the first in 2017 and the second in 2020. This paper builds on lessons learned from two different collaborative models.

This paper frames the unique history and the close-proximity of the architecture and structural engineering (Architectural Engineering) departments at Cal Poly in discussion of program's course work.
