ABSTRACT

The paper presents the design process of an innovative structure, from design concept to detail design. The design follows two main ideas: the proposal of an innovative structure based on a hybrid structural typology and the value of landscape, searching a maximum structural lightness and minimum impact to the river. The structural design is based on hybrid typology research between a suspended structure and the horizontal arch effect of the deck, configuring a spatial self-tensioned structure. The construction of physical models during the design allows to understand the structural scheme and to test different configurations. As a complement to this paper, the critical practice: “ Physical model: Goián-Cerveira footbridge over the Miño River, Spain-Portugal” presents this experience.
