ABSTRACT

South Korean architect Byoung Cho has developed a unique design approach that draws inspiration from Asian culture and modern art. The ideas of the architecture and the expressions arise through an experimental search of the properties and possibilities of materials based on an awareness of Korean culture in arts, crafts and architecture, which emphasize the spontaneous and conjures up beauty in imperfection (Mahk). The post-war Korean monochrome art movement (Dansaekhwa), which cultivates a bodily repetitive spontaneity, has also been an inspirational source for investigating concrete's random plastic appearance during the casting process and the repetitive movements of diverse metal plates. Likewise, has American minimalism inspired to make precise compositions of pure forms with high material substance. Structural suspension techniques are integrated with the architectural design approach to achieve this minimalistic precision.
