ABSTRACT

Observation areas and sightseeing platforms of tall structures have “view” as their primary design purpose. Expectations on the part of the user have changed over time to also include the ability to take effective photographs with both DSLR and cell phone cameras. Yet the design of these spaces has been distracted by other factors over the years, often decreasing the vitality and immediacy of the viewing experience. There are ways to maintain occupant safety and monetize without completely degrading the primary experiential value of the space. This paper will provide an overview of potential best practices in the design of these venues by taking a critical look at the materiality and space planning of a wide range of such spaces.
