ABSTRACT

This article investigates how the narrative described in the competition brief guides and forms the entries. Two educational institutions, The New School of Architecture in Aarhus and Aalborg University Science and Innovation Hub developed by the Danish National Building Agency, are chosen as case studies. Both projects were structured around the novel organizational and collaboration model, New Partnering, inspired by the Finnish Alliance model. The analysis takes point of departure in a qualitative approach, where three categories of text bodies are identified to locate how and what narratives are present in the briefs. The competition proposals are screened in five general architectural principles to locate the narrative of the brief. This small and preliminary examination of narratives in competition briefs suggest that narratives could be used more strategically and deliberately to guide and qualify entries in favor of the developer's visions and intentions.
