ABSTRACT

This chapter presents a client perspective on considering, creating, and delivering social value in the commissioning of capital projects. We set out two example projects to showcase South Yorkshire Housing Association’s approach to social value: a workspace and a new housing development. We also offer two neighbourhood development projects, one from the UK: a Southey Owlerton Area Regeneration in Sheffield and an exemplary international illustration of how a client can drive social value: Alt-Erlaa housing estate in Vienna, Austria. These cases provide practical insights and demonstrate how clients can help achieve selected Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs); specifically, SDGs 3 Good health and well-being, 11 Sustainable cities and communities, 12 Responsible consumption and production, and 17 Partnership for the goals, and also 8 Decent work and economic growth, 10 Reduced inequalities, 13 Climate action, 15 Life on land, and 16 Peace justice and strong institutions.
