ABSTRACT

This paper presents an alternative method to couple the hydraulic component with the mechanical component in a constitutive model for unsaturated soils. Some pioneering work on hydro-mechanical coupling is first reviewed. Generalised constitutive relations on coupled hydro-mechanical behaviour are then introduced. These generalised constitutive relations are incorporated into an existing model, the SFG model, to predict the effects of specific volume on the saturation-suction relationship. The coupled model is validated against experimental data for different soils.
