ABSTRACT

The bearing capacity of a surface strip footing on Hostun sand was determined under saturated, dry and unsaturated conditions in specially designed equipment. The variation of bearing capacity with respect to matric suction was also predicted by modifying Vanapalli & Mohamed (2007) equation taking account for plane strain conditions and using the Kinematic Element Method (KEM) proposed by Gusmann (1986). There was a reasonably good comparison between the measured experimental results of bearing capacity measurements and predicted values using both the methods.
