ABSTRACT

This paper analyses planning strategies and design solutions based on the promotion of walkability for regenerating the urban environment. Starting from the analysis of different virtuous European case studies, where urban regeneration policies have been linked with the promotion of soft mobility, some key factors affecting walkability have been detected: livability, safety, attractiveness and accessibility. The proposed analysis has been carried out both at urban and local scale, by considering a set of indicators easy to be measured that enabled to describe and measure the four main identified factors, thus providing insights for activating similar policies in other contexts.
