ABSTRACT

This paper aims to discover if and how the Free-Accessibility Design Plan in Taranto, can improve the rediscovery of local identity and even if historical identity together with economic criteria can help to reinforce urban pedestrian accessibility. Local identity can be used as a proxy of urban beauty (at least it’s historical beauty). In this case, urban beauty is directly connected to identity and costs. Thus, the Free-Accessibility Plan becomes a relevant part of sustainable urban mobility strategy which affects the land use decisions, within an overall urban regeneration policy. So, the paper illustrates the structure of the plan, its methodology and results inside the urban regeneration strategy.
