ABSTRACT

An adrenal crisis is a potentially life-threatening event for a patient with adrenal insufficiency. Triggers for adrenal crisis during pregnancy may be inappropriately considered part of a normal adaptation to gestation and thus not managed appropriately. Childbirth is a particularly dangerous time for adrenally insufficient women who are not prophylactically treated with stress doses of glucocorticoids. Patient education is a critical aspect of prevention of adrenal crisis in pregnant women with adrenal insufficiency. Similarly, provider education is an essential aspect of ensuring appropriate management of crises when they do arise.
